Some people say, 'I believe in God but I don't believe all the miracles in the Bible.' Is it reasonable for intelligent people to believe in miracles?
In life we get used to weighing up reality and fantasy. We watch a film and get involved, but we know often that it's a fictional story brought to life. Someone lies to us or tries to con us and we learn to discern between truth and fiction. There are even fake Christians doing fake miracles to try to get money out of people - and they give Christianity a bad name! But is it reasonable to believe in the miracles in the Bible? Well this is best answered by remembering who God is. Many people think that God is just like a human, but with a little bit more knowledge and power. But the reality is that God is utterly different from us in many ways. Here are some key attributes of God:
Some people think this is impossible. But that's because they have never realised who God is or had a proper encounter with Him. It is in the very nature of God that He can do and be all these things, otherwise He would not be God! Just because we can't do supernatural things, it doesn't mean that God can't. If you were to tell someone from a remote village in a rainforest that a computer can do vast mathematical computations which a human brain can't manage, he might not believe you. But that's because he has no experience of computers. For those of us who have used computers for years, little now surprises us about the possibilities with computers. So with God: if you realise that God is all powerful, then to understand that He can do miracles is not hard. Otherwise He isn't God. If we believe that God created the universe be speaking, then healing the sick or raising the dead is not very difficult. And the great thing is that that power that God has is available to Christians to help them with their daily lives. See also: Is there any conflict between science and Christianity? |
